On September 4-8, 2011 the World Trade Center in Moscow will host the 7th International Conference on Isotopes (7ICI). This key science and business international event will bring together the elite of World isotope industry. Following organizations will take part in the conferece: World Council on Isotopes, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Belgian Nuclear Research Center, Association of Medical Physicists in Russia, EurAsian Oncology Program, Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization (ANSTO) and many others. Organizer of the conference is State Atomic Energy Corporation “Rosatom”.
The conference's program, which brings together representatives of scientific community, businessmen and manufactures, will feature plenary sessions, as well as an exposition of the latest achievements in the field of isotope production and equipment.
On the initiative of the Russian hosts, the conference will for the first time include a business program in order to provide the participants with an opportunity to discuss global isotope market trends. The issue of forming favorable climate for investments aimed at broadening opportunities for the use of isotopes and production capacity increase will be discussed among other issues. This proposed format is quite non-conventional for a scientific event. However, according to the organizers, such a move is justified given the rapid rapprochement of science and business, which is manifested today in Russia and the whole world.
One other novelty is a vacancy fair included in the framework of the conference. It is aimed at strengthening the human resources of nuclear industry. The fair is meant to provide a platform for the dialogue between major Russian and international companies and young specialists who are currently studying in RosAtom's specialized education institutes.
“The choice of Russia as the country-organizer for the upcoming conference isn't a coincidence. It's a sign of the recognition of our influence within the international nuclear community,” commented Mikhail Batkov, Director of the program “Radiacionnye Tekhnologii” (Radiotechnologies) of the State Atomic Energy Corporation “Rosatom”. “Russia is among the creators of isotope industry. We possess unique, cutting-edge technologies, our global market share is significant and we have a huge potential for further development”.
The 7th International Conference on Isotopes is a high-profile platform. The international nuclear community is planning to use it for the purpose of asserting the nuclear industry in the broad context of alternative opportunities. Isotopes are widely used today in nuclear medicine, agriculture, ecology, security, archeology, geology and many other fields.
There is a particularly pressing challenge of satiating the global market with an isotope that is crucial for medicine: Molybdenum-99, the shortage of which had brought about the stopping of NRU nuclear reactor in Canada. In such circumstances the global isotope industry is facing a large-scale challenge of developing a complex approach to industrial production of isotopes and ensuring their security, which includes the transportation of isotope products and their disposal, as well as the necessary legal support for such an activity.
The record of Isotope Conferences covers the span of 16 years. Since 1995 this major forum, which brings together representatives of science and industry in isotope field, takes place in different countries every three years. The last conference that took place in Seoul (South Korea) in 2008 was the most successful in its history: it brought together more than 1000 participants.
